Buck Hill Birch Bump: Race recap from Adam Caughey

Buck Hill started like most races do for me.  I started near the back after making a run to the car to get my timing chip, which made me last to line up.  I usually have problems clipping into my pedals on starts(must be nerves) and Buck Hill was no different.  My wave seemed to have 40 racers and after a bad start I climbed well enough to be maybe 10th into the singletrack.  A bad turn let 5 riders, including Jesse, pass me.  After I settled down a bit I got into my groove and didn't need to clip out at all for the rest of the race.  I was right behind a WannaBee at the top of the hill on my 2nd and 3rd laps but he always pulled away in the tight stuff.  The fourth lap I passed him on the wide open sections but he was right behind me till the finish.  At the finish line there is a little uphill after a big downhill.  I thought I would have enough momentum down that hill to make it to the finish but I should of dropped down to my middle chainring.
Without gearing down, I ended up slowing way down and two riders passed me just before the finish, including that WannaBee rider.  Maybe next time.  I am really looking forward to this time trial at Maplelag.  Hopefully no corners to slow me down.  -Adam Caughey
